How COVID Affected a Close Friend

This month I want to share a COVID-related story. I know there is a lot of information—both accurate and inaccurate—circulating about COVID. We are all bombarded hearing about the dos and “dont’s”, but it is crucial NOT to wait until you are personally affected to take action.

Even those of us in the medical community have been touched by COVID—in our patients, in our workplace, in our communities, and even in our families. I want to reach out to you as a friend, sister, daughter, and citizen to take COVID seriously.

COVID Touches Everyone

A close friend of mine—family practice physician Dr. Sandra McGowan–lost her healthy 51-year-old husband and mother-in-law to COVID despite taking important health precautions. Her life is forever changed by this pervasive illness. Remember, COVID is serious and simple steps can go a long way to helping you to not only protect yourself, but those around you.

Slowing the Spread of COVID—Simple & Effective

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Singing the alphabet song should pass the right amount of time!
  • Wear a mask in crowded indoor and outdoor situations. The CDC has modified its mask recommendations suggesting that even fully vaccinated people should wear masks indoors in areas where transmission of the virus is substantial or high.
  • Get the COVID vaccination. It is simple, safe, and effective.

Ask your Health Professional

If you are unsure whether you should get the vaccine or which vaccine you should choose, just ask me or your local health professional. We are here to support you and to help you make the right decision for your health and the health of your family!
