New Guidelines on Calcium and Vitamin D for Osteoporosis

ALERT! Updated guidelines on Vitamin D, Calcium, or Combined Supplementation for the Primary Prevention of Fractures in Community Dwelling Older Adults! DO NOT TAKE!

In the past it was common practice to put all post menopausal women on calcium and vitamin D to prevent fractures. However, the most recent recommendations have changed. Please note:

  1. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force concludes that the current evidence is INSUFFICIENT to assess the balance of the benefits and harms of vitamin D and calcium supplementation , alone or combined, for the primary prevention of fractures in men and premenopausal women.
  2. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force concludes that the current evidence is INSUFFICIENT to assess the balance of the benefits and harms of daily supplementation with dosages greater than 400 IU of vitamin D and greater than 1000 mg calcium for the primary prevention of fractures in community-dwelling postmenopausal women.
  3. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends AGAINST daily supplementation with 400 IU or less of vitamin D and 1000 mg or less of calcium for the primary prevention of fractures in community dwelling postmenopausal women.

BOTTOM LINE- YOU SHOULD NOT BE TAKING VITAMIN D AND CALCIUM AS SUPPLEMENTS TO PREVENT OSTEOPOROSIS.

You may ask, what can prevent osteoporosis? Weight bearing exercises and following a healthy diet. I highly recommend a weighted vest to strengthen your back and core. Please see my video attached!
